SBI Internships
The NCSBI Internship Program is for currently enrolled college/university juniors and seniors or graduate students.  Applications from a varity of undergraduate and graduate disciplines are considered.  The program allows students to learn how a state investigative agency functions and supplements classroom learning with practical experience.

Application Deadlines - (completed applications should be received on/before the deadline; incomplete applications will not be considered)

  • Fall semester applications are due May 1 (August 20 - November 20, 2024)
  • Spring semester applications are due October 1 (January 21 - April 25, 2025)
  • Summer semester applications are due February 1 (May 20 - July 25, 2025)

All internships are unpaid. The NCSBI offers two types of internships: full-time and part-time. 
Full-time is 30-40 hours per week.  Part-time is 16 hours (2 full days) per week.

Eligibility
Candidates applying for an internship with the NCSBI MUST:

  • Be a responsible law-abiding citizen with high moral character and personal integrity.
  • Be enrolled in a four-year degree program at a college or university and have completed their sophomore year with a Grade Point Average of no less than 2.0 in a 4.0 scale OR in a Master's Degree program. 
  • Not have been convicted of a felony or any other serious crime. Selected applicants will undergo a criminal history record check and polygraph.
  • Maintain a favorable credit history demonstrating responsible fiscal management and ability to live within means; undergo a credit check with favorable results.
  • Have a basic working knowledge and understanding of word processing computer programs.

Application Process
The NCSBI application process is now online.  You will complete the application and upload the following documents.  Documents are only allowed in these formats:  PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPG, PNG, TXT.

  • SBI Internship Waiver Form
    • The waiver MUST be printed, completed and notarized.
  • Résumé (no more than two pages)
  • List of three references with updated/reliable contact information.
  • Letter of interest (no more than two pages). Include your reasons for wanting to participate in the program, ways you can contribute to the section, your career plans, college and community activities, honors and awards.
  • Letter of recommendation from college/university - academic or school personnel.  In addition, you may include any other letter of recommendation from supervisor(s), scout/troop leader, law enforcement personnel, etc.  This letter may be emailed directly to Christy Lanham/Internship Coordinator if university personnel will not give to student. 
  • Copy of current driver’s license (both front and back).
  • College transcript must be in a sealed envelope affixed with the seal or stamp of the school's registrar OR it can be emailed directly to clanham@ncsbi.gov from the registrar.  The transcript can not be uploaded during the application process.
