Field Operations
SBI field agents provide expert investigative assistance with criminal cases when requested by local police, sheriffs, district attorneys, and judges. In addition, crimes are investigated for which the SBI has original jurisdiction --drug and arson investigations, election law violations, human trafficking, weapons of mass destruction, child sexual abuse in day care centers, computer crimes against children and crimes involving state property.

The SBI has 254 sworn special agents working in eight district offices across North Carolina.

Air Wing - the SBI Aircraft Operations Unit has three full time pilots who respond to investigative law enforcement support requests.

Computer Crimes - agents help law enforcement across North Carolina solve sophisticated crimes involving digital evidence, particularly internet crimes against children.

Diversion and Environmental Crimes - agents investigate illegal prescription drug and environmental crimes. 

Fire and Arson Investigation Unit - agents work with local, state and federal investigators to determine the origin and cause of the fire. 

Clandestine Labs - agents respond to illegal drug laboratories.
