SBI Deputy Director Greg Tart to Retire

Tart,-Gregory-(2014_White).jpgDeputy Director Greg Tart, a Johnston County native, retires from the State Bureau of Investigation Dec. 31 after 30 years of law enforcement service to the State of North Carolina. 

Tart worked some of the biggest cases in the history of the SBI including the murders of UNC student president Eve Carson; a pregnant wife, Michelle Young; and nine-year-old C.J. Wilkerson of Wake Forest.  Tart reinvestigated the Duke Lacrosse case which resulted in the exoneration of three Duke Lacrosse players.

During his tenure, Tart investigated the murders of several law enforcement officers in the state including Johnston County Deputy Paul West and Clayton Police Lt. Monica Carey. Tart has led efforts in the Bureau against violent crime and drug enforcement and helped create a new report writing database for SBI investigations. He helped establish an SBI cold case unit to look at unsolved murders. 

Tart has worked with numerous law enforcement agencies across the state and with prosecutors on state and federal levels.

Tart started his career as a field agent in the Raleigh field office in 1992, and became the special agent in charge of the Capitol District Office. In 2011, he was promoted to assistant director and managed the SBI’s eight field offices.

Tart graduated from Clayton High School in 1985 and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1989.
