Polygraph

The Polygraph Unit of the State Bureau of Investigation is comprised of eight full-time examiners and four part-time examiners who are stationed in the eight SBI Districts across the state.

These examiners conduct crime-related polygraph examinations for any local, state or federal law enforcement agency working in the state of North Carolina. These tests are conducted on a case-by-case basis at the request of officers and detectives to verify information already received in an investigation or to further develop their investigation. The unit also conducts pre-employment polygraph examinations of Department of Justice personnel and of Special Police and Campus Police applicants who seek certification as sworn law enforcement officers in the state of North Carolina.

All agents assigned to the Polygraph Unit have received extensive training on the subjects of interview and interrogation, and must successfully complete an eight-week-long polygraph school approved by the American Polygraph Association.
