What is a fingerprint?

The volar skin (skin on the fingers, palms, toes and the soles of the feet) has a texture surface that is continuously corrugated with raised area or ridges. These ridges increase the friction between the volar surface and other surfaces that they come into contact with. These ridges are commonly referred to as friction ridges. When you touch a surface, natural oils and sweat that are excreted through the sweat glands, are deposited on a surface leaving a fingerprint impression or a reproduction of the friction ridges.
