Jurisdiction

The SBI has original jurisdiction in a limited number of criminal categories:

• Drug Investigations
  
• Arson Investigations
  
• Election Laws
  
• Child Sexual Abuse in Day Care Centers
  
• Theft and Misuse of State Property

Additional criminal investigations, such as homicides, missing person cases, robberies and property crimes, are initiated by the SBI at the request of the local law enforcement agency or district attorney in the jurisdiction where the offense occurred.  The SBI cannot generally begin an investigation at the request of a private citizen.
