Sorting the Software:
Navigating Parental Controls

"No piece of hardware or software can take the place of your instruction and supervision over your children." - NC Attorney General Roy Cooper

There is no simple technical “fix” to the problems that can arise when children use the Internet. The most important thing for parents to do is stay engaged with their children. The best way to keep track of what kids are doing online is to personally monitor their online activities.

In some circumstances, software can play a role. Navigating the world of parental control software can be a bit overwhelming for a parent who is not tech-savvy. Fortunately, some independent and impartial reviews of software are available, and they can help parents figure out what program might be right for their family.

Before you buy or download anything, assess your needs.

The information included under "How to Choose" in this Consumer Reports article can help.

If you don't have time to become an expert, review the reviews.

ConsumerSearch.com gathers software reviews from a variety of sources including Consumer Reports and CNet.com, and ranks the products based on those reviews. The site also provides detailed additional information, and links to the original reviews when they are available.
