SBI arrests woman for embezzling funds intended for charity

RALEIGH -- The Sate Bureau of Investigation today arrested a woman for embezzling more than $6,000 worth of funds primarily donated by state employees to go to charities.

Kimberly Douglas Lane, 48, of Raleigh, was charged by the State Bureau of Investigation Special Investigations Unit after an audit confirmed $6,188.90 was missing from two charity-intended accounts.

Lane was employed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue when the funds were reported missing in August, 2014. She resigned that same month. Lane was a 28-year state employee and held an administrative assistant position when she resigned.

The missing money was collected by North Carolina State Employees’ Combined Campaign and the North Carolina Department of Revenue Employees’ Activity Coordination Team (REACT). Lane was the treasurer for those accounts.

The combined campaign is a workplace giving program that began operation in 1984 and it contributes to federations and independent charities. REACT is an in-house Department of Revenue fund for social functions to build morale within the agency.

Lane turned herself in at the Wake County Jail where she was released on a written promise to appear in court. She has repaid the monies. No court date is scheduled.
