Burke County Couple Arrested for Child Abuse

A Burke County couple was arrested yesterday by agents from the State Bureau of Investigation’s Northwestern District.

On Tuesday, the couple’s two month old daughter arrived at the Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte. Once there, the medical staff discovered the child had multiple broken ribs and a broken right arm.

On Wednesday, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office requested the SBI conduct a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s injuries. Later that day, three agents went to the hospital and interviewed the parents.

On Thursday, Benjamin David Houk, 22, and Krystal Kaye Houk, 27, both of Morganton were arrested and each charged with two felony counts of child abuse. The pair each received a $100,000 secured bond and are currently in custody at the Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility.
